In the current environment of political upheaval, psychologists and psychotherapists find ourselves in new territory. As citizens and mental health professionals (MHPs), we are affected and sometimes traumatized by our current and recent political climate, personally, professionally, and collectively. MHPs recognize that virtually all human experience is filtered & understood through the prism of transference, from intimate to social relationships to larger community involvement, to political beliefs. Transference, the complex, powerful, yet often unconscious, dynamics, based in relational attachment, and social, cultural life experiences from our past, results in significant right hemispheric, implicit, affective, somatic perceptions. The concepts of political transference and political trauma require active consideration, recognition, management, and at times, healing. This course explores political transference, trauma, and fatigue, as well as the development of insight, effective coping, resilience, and growth. Paths to political healing considered. Media, Didactic, Q/A.
Educational Objectives: Attendees will be able to:
1. Identify and discuss the emergence of political transference/countertransference and the experience of past/current political trauma (primary, secondary, and/or vicarious),
2. Describe and discuss a plan for maintaining personal wellness and care that incorporates insight and coping that can yield resilience, growth, and healing, while sustaining their conscious and ethical practice as a psychologist/psychotherapist.
3. Identify 1-2 interventions for identifying and ethically managing their own political transference/countertransference, trauma, and fatigue in the context of their professional role of psychologist.
