DESCRIPTION:
Though recorded live on March 28, at the beginning of our move to Telehealth as a profession for COVID-19, the material in this webinar continue to resonate and apply as we continue in this process.
COVID-19 is in itself its own crisis and full of its own rapid adjustment, crisis-responses that yield their own traumatic effects for those of us attending to the mental health and well-being of others.
Since mid March, we have moved in increasing awareness of the COVID-19’s dangers and intensity. It was classified a pandemic just within the last month. Therapy sessions increasingly included some therapists and clients addressing the impending crisis. I personally went discussing the potential of having to go from in-office sessions to phone or online through some web-conferencing platform implementing this platform and transitioning my entire practice, meaning all of my patients, to that form of therapy.
Symptoms of Fatigue, Fear, Panic, Confusion, Denial, Resistance, Over-Functioning, Over-Compensating, Loss of Confidence, Loss of Ritual, Loss of Consistency, Loss of the Familiar, Loss or Disruption of Clinical Skill Sets and long-established Norms held for decades, Paranoia, Irritability, Avoidance are surging for both clients, patients, and the health care providers serving them. The latter are all among the Cues for Transference, Signs of Secondary Trauma, and/or Symptoms of Compassion Fatigue I have taught clinicians and other health care providers for years both in courses and through consultation.
Webinar to address:
• Normalize the emergence of Transference and Countertransference, Trauma, and Secondary Trauma related to COVID-19.
• Recognize activation of Tele-Countertransference.
• Recognize activation of Tele-Transference for our clients/patients.
• Frame seemingly new experiences in context of prior established knowledge and skill sets.
• Address coping with rapid shifts in clinical practice.
